La cinquième génération de Golf a fait ses débuts en 2003. Le modèle n'était pas seulement stylistiquement changé, il était aussi le plus grand de la famille Golf. Depuis 2005, offert en Europe et aux États-Unis dans la version berline sous le nom commun Jetta (en USA Golf V a été vendu comme un lapin). Un an plus tard, VW présentait une version récréative de Golf Plus nommée CrossGolf. Sur la base du Golf V, l'Eos cabriolet-coupé a également été créé. Golf V n'a pas répondu aux attentes du marché de Volkswagen, c'est pourquoi en 2008, deux ans avant la date prévue, il a été remplacé par le modèle de la prochaine génération. Le golf suit une évolution lente et réfléchie basée sur des modes passagères. Dans un sens, le nouveau modèle ressemble à ce que nous attendions. Avec de grandes roues, ça sera toujours bien.
